100 Amp vs 200 Amp: Which Do You Need?

If your breakers trip when the microwave, hair dryer, and space heater are running at the same time, this is not an abstract question. For many homeowners, the 100 amp vs 200 amp decision comes up when the panel is old, the house is being remodeled, or an EV charger is on the wish list.

The right answer depends on the age of the home, the size of the electrical load, and what you plan to add. A small older house with gas heat, gas water heater, and no major new equipment may still function on 100 amps. But a lot of East Bay homes were wired for a different era, long before air conditioning, induction cooking, hot tubs, home offices, and Level 2 car charging became normal.

100 amp vs 200 amp: the real difference

The basic difference is capacity. A 100 amp service gives your property less available electrical power than a 200 amp service. That does not automatically mean 100 amps is unsafe or wrong. It means there is less room for simultaneous demand, less room for expansion, and less margin when modern loads are added.

In practical terms, a 200 amp panel usually makes life easier in a house that has been updated or is about to be updated. It allows more branch circuits, better load distribution, and more flexibility for larger appliances and future upgrades. If you are adding an EV charger, electric range, heat pump, air conditioning, workshop equipment, or an ADU, 200 amps often stops being a luxury and starts becoming the correct service size.

That said, service size is only one part of the picture. A home can have a 200 amp panel and still have bad wiring, poor grounding, double-tapped breakers, damaged bus bars, or unsafe legacy equipment. A proper evaluation looks at the whole service, not just the number on the main breaker.

When 100 amp service is still enough

There are homes where 100 amp service still makes sense. If the house is modest in size, the major appliances are gas, and the electrical system is in good condition, 100 amps can be adequate. This is especially true when the load calculation supports it and the homeowner is not planning major electrical additions.

For example, a smaller home with gas furnace, gas water heater, gas dryer, and gas range may place relatively light demand on the electrical system. In that case, the limiting factor may not be service size at all. It may be an outdated panel brand, poor grounding, worn breakers, or old wiring that needs correction.

This is where people get confused. They assume 100 amps means automatic replacement. Not always. If the existing service is safe, code-compliant, and large enough for the actual calculated load, keeping 100 amps may be reasonable. But that decision should come from a real field assessment, not guesswork.

When 200 amp service is the better choice

A 200 amp upgrade is usually the better move when the house is being brought into the present, not left in the past. If you are remodeling a kitchen, adding bathrooms, converting garage space, installing central air, or preparing for EV charging, the panel needs to support those changes without running at the edge.

Older homes in Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, and similar neighborhoods often started with much smaller electrical systems than modern living demands. Some still have Federal Pacific, Zinsco, fuse panels, or other outdated service equipment that should be replaced regardless of size. In those cases, if the panel is being changed anyway, it often makes more sense to install a properly sized 200 amp service if the utility requirements and load justify it.

Landlords and property buyers should also look at future use, not just current use. A rental that works today may need an EV charger tomorrow. A buyer may add laundry, mini-splits, or an induction range after closing. A 200 amp service can help avoid paying twice for electrical work.

Panel space matters almost as much as amperage

A lot of homeowners say, “I don’t need more power. I just need more breaker space.” That can be true, but breaker space and service capacity are related.

Some older 100 amp panels are physically crowded, use tandem breakers, or have been modified in ways that are no longer acceptable. Even if the connected load is not extreme, a cramped panel creates its own problems. It becomes harder to add dedicated circuits for kitchen appliances, laundry, bathroom receptacles, garage use, or AFCI and GFCI protection. Troubleshooting also gets harder when the panel is packed and poorly labeled.

A new 200 amp panel often solves both problems at once. You get more room for properly organized circuits and more overall capacity. That is one reason homeowners often report fewer nuisance trips and a cleaner, safer system after the upgrade.

EV chargers changed the conversation

Ten years ago, many homes could get by on smaller service because the biggest electrical loads were limited. EV charging changed that.

A Level 2 charger can add a significant continuous load. In some homes, that load can be managed within an existing 100 amp service, especially if other major appliances are gas and a formal load calculation comes out favorably. In other homes, the charger pushes the system past what is practical, especially when air conditioning, electric cooking, or other heavy loads are present.

This is why there is no honest one-size-fits-all answer. Some electricians will automatically say you need 200 amps for every EV charger. Others will say just squeeze it in. The right approach is to calculate the load, inspect the service equipment, and decide based on the actual house.

Cost is real, but so is doing it twice

Homeowners often ask if they should stay with 100 amps to save money. Sometimes that is reasonable. But sometimes it is short-term thinking that leads to a second round of work a year or two later.

A service upgrade from 100 to 200 amps may involve the panel, meter section, grounding, bonding, service entrance conductors, weatherhead or underground service coordination, utility approval, permits, and inspection. If the work is needed, it should be done correctly. Trying to save money by undersizing the service can be expensive if you later add an EV charger, heat pump, or ADU and have to reopen the same job.

On the other hand, if the home genuinely does not need 200 amps, a good electrician should say so. The goal is not to sell the biggest panel. The goal is to install a safe electrical service that matches the property.

Safety issues can force the decision

Sometimes the 100 amp vs 200 amp question is not really about usage. It is about dangerous equipment.

If the home has a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel, Zinsco panel, fuse box, overheated bussing, corrosion, or signs of burning, the immediate issue is safety. In those cases, replacement of the panel or service equipment becomes the priority. Once replacement is required, the next question is whether to replace like-for-like or upgrade to 200 amps.

This is where experience matters. A service change is not just swapping one box for another. It involves code requirements, grounding electrode systems, conductor sizing, permit work, utility coordination, and knowing what will pass inspection without callbacks or surprises.

How to decide without guessing

The best decision starts with a load calculation and a field inspection. Not a phone estimate based on square footage alone. Not a guess from the age of the house.

A proper evaluation looks at the panel brand and condition, the service conductors, the grounding and bonding, major appliances, heating and cooling equipment, planned additions, and available utility service. It should also consider whether the house has overhead or underground PG&E service, because that affects the scope of the work.
